Hicks developed a collaborative process with artist Heather Gordon to create the portraits in this series. Hicks begins with a portrait of a person that holds special significance to one or both of them. The image is then overlaid with a unique origami folding pattern generated by Gordon, based on the subject’s data set: birth dates, zip codes, age, etc.
The new image is printed and folded accordingly. This action creates a 3D portrait that is then captured in the same format as the original - transitioning from analog, to digital, and back again. Through this repetitive series of transformative actions, they fragment and reconstruct their own personal histories to investigate meaning.
